Ann-Sofie Back and BACK AW 2009
“Ann-Sofie Back burns in hell” is the theme for her Autumn Winter 2009 collection. Drawing inspiration from the U.S. and traditional American stereotypes, although referenced from the less traditional context of horror movies we all watched as teenagers; Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Carrie, Hellraiser, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Evil Dead among others.
The college kid’s vicious dreams in Nightmare on Elm Street have inspired distorted snake and checked prints, and the blood dripping hat of Freddie Krueger. Freddie’s knife-glove appears to have scratched a pilot jacket and gloves, and torn through an entire theme of slashed denim and jersey - shirts, skirts, vests, dresses and jeans. The slashed and ripped design is an unconventional decoration on every day garments such as jeans and sweatshirts and vests.
Sweatshirts, baseball jackets and jeans are laced in leather and covered with cross-stitching, wearable translations of the crude stitched patches on Leatherface’s mask in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Crude bodybag zips feature on prom dresses in snake lace, as well as on coats, jackets, and knits. There are also knitted pieces in the collection that use zips as standout details to more traditional garments.
In Poltergeist 2, Mr Freeling uncovers an Indian burial ground under a housing development, giving Back further inspiration for dream-catcher inspired dresses and t-shirts, jersey tops, skirts and jewellery. Feathers and pearl details tie in with the Indian inspiration and feature heavily throughout this theme.
The mindless drooling monsters will hunt for human flesh sporting the usual zombie garb; dungarees, checked shirts, biker jackets and denim shirts, as well as knitted heavy metal t-shirts.
Sheefun Chan has designed Carrie’s distorted nightmarish tiara as well as her dripping jewellery and sunglasses. A series of bubble-gum pieces including earrings and pendants also reflect the American teen references - but don't be alarmed, the pre-chewed bubble gum is resin coated!
